“CFD analysis of optimal number of by-passes for In-Line-Inspection tools (smart pigs)”

The science behind drilling holes in cups of smart pigs is scarce and it has been done throughout the years based on companies’ experience. However, no engineering analysis is available in literature as of today on the optimal number, sequence and pattern of by-passes along the tool. This study pretends to clarify and demonstrate the flow behavior through the orifices using CFD with realistic parameters commonly found during an inspection run.
